If you really want your new home to look great and impress all of your upcoming visitors, you need to install a polished concrete floor. This is a popular option across Australia today, and if installed correctly, it will look great and last for decades. Still, if you decide to go ahead with this option, you need to ensure that it is properly maintained to keep it in tiptop condition and protect your investment. But how do you go about this, and is it something that you should take on yourself?

Looking after Your Floor

As you will realise when you decide to install a polished concrete floor, it is not one of the cheapest options available. However, it may well be one of the most cost-effective solutions when assessed over the long term because it is so durable as well as being highly versatile. It will withstand a heavy amount of traffic without too much issue, and if you install it on your outside patio areas well, it will resist the elements.

Getting Everything Ready

So, when it comes to maintenance, the first thing to do is sweep the surface and get rid of any accumulated debris. This is very important as if any dust or grit is left, it may damage the top surface when cleaning and remove some of the lustre.

Once you have swept everything up, use a household detergent mixed with water to get rid of any remaining dust residue. This will also eliminate any tiny stains you may have missed when cleaning up a spill of some kind.

Polishing in Steps

  • Polishing can now take place in stages. Once the floor is completely dry, you can use a "coarse" polishing disc to buff the floor. Always work from the outside towards the inside and use circular motions as you proceed slowly but surely.
  • Once you've finished that pass, you can swap over the polishing disc to something that has a finer grit. Go back to the beginning, start again using a circular motion, and proceed from one side to the other.
  • The third stage will involve the finest grit polishing disc available. Once you've finished, your concrete floor should have been returned to its former glory, and there will be no trace of any pre-existing marks or stubborn stains.
  • If you really want to go the extra distance, apply polish to the entire area, while adding a product that will help to guard against future stains. This may be a good idea for your outdoor area, and this final step could protect against grease and other residues beneath your barbecue grill.

Outsourcing the Work

Clearly, this is a labour-intensive job, but it's crucial if you want to maintain your investment. Many people in your situation will outsource the work to an experienced contractor, so they can simply sit back and admire the final result.

About Me
Building a New House

If you have decided to build a new house, you may be trying to figure out where to begin. Drawing up the plans, buying materials and laying foundations can all be time-consuming and sometimes confusing work. I was quite bullish when I decided to build my own home and I tried to do a lot of this work single-handedly. However, I soon realised that this would be impossible. In the end, I called in a team of construction contractors who helped to complete the property. I watched them at work and I learnt lots of useful stuff which I will write about here.
