You wear a coat to shield yourself from the cold and rain which may be threatening to your health. The coating principle is also used on materials to avoid any chemical and physical degradation caused by external elements. Concrete does not wander far from this policy. Considering it is widely used in construction, concrete has to be well protected to ensure its durability with concrete protective coatings. When building a house, it is essential to examine the various coating techniques used to protect your concrete surfaces. Some of the most commonly used are outlined below

  1. Surface Treatment – The surface treatment of concrete is a process which employs a lot of preparation, painting and the application of the coating. To get the best treatment, it is necessary to consider the concrete type, the preparation process and the treatment combination to be used. Before commencing on surface treatment, it is crucial to clear the entire surface. This includes cleaning all the oil, grime and paint as well as the calcareous salts present.  It is also essential to remove all the laitance from the surface to allow the primer used in the treatment process to penetrate the concrete thoroughly.
  2. Chemical Resistant Coatings – Some places, such as labs and industrial facilities, use a lot of chemicals which can be quite dangerous for the concrete. Some acids, for instance, might slowly burn through the surface, leaving behind an unpleasant appearance. To protect such surfaces, it is important to consider using a chemical resistant coating which will create a layer between the concrete and the splashed chemicals. Most of the chemical coatings used for the protection of concrete are in paint form. The coatings are mostly applied to resist the corrosive nature of acids. Eventually, the coat will ensure durability and easy cleaning as well as abrasion and chemical resistance.
  3. Water-Resistant Coatings – Just as concrete is used in the construction of industrial facilities, it is also used in the building of dams. This, therefore, means that it is essential to consider the damage which might be brought about by the water and how best to mitigate this. Such a scenario calls for the development of water-resistant coats which can be used to prevent water from weakening the physical structure of the concrete. For instance, in the construction of dams, the concrete can be treated with an asphaltic material which prevents water and vapour from moving within the structure.‌
About Me
Building a New House

If you have decided to build a new house, you may be trying to figure out where to begin. Drawing up the plans, buying materials and laying foundations can all be time-consuming and sometimes confusing work. I was quite bullish when I decided to build my own home and I tried to do a lot of this work single-handedly. However, I soon realised that this would be impossible. In the end, I called in a team of construction contractors who helped to complete the property. I watched them at work and I learnt lots of useful stuff which I will write about here.
